You just might be addicted to GIMPS if
you wake up in a cold sweat at the midnight hour after an excruciating nightmare that an applied statistician made a breakthrough in your beloved logical number theory with hypothesis testing on a bunch of numbers.

the police raid your house looking for a cannabis factory, suspecting you have one due to the amount of heat being generated.
Or, on the input side;
your electric utility contacts you about your high usage level and suggests time-of-use billing in place of flat-rate, after inquiring whether your home is still being used as a residence, or has been converted to an energy intensive business.
(Well, one could theoretically have revenue from prime-discovery prizes...)
The nearest utility distribution transformer hums. Loudly. Noticeably more loudly than a few years ago. After the utility company replaced it. Possibly with a larger-rated unit.

Or if you imagine your numerous voluminous statistical numerology postings have any influence whatsoever on any other GIMPSter's sleep patterns.

I also used no natural gas last month.

You just might be addicted to GIMPS if having 1,000,000,000,000.555 GHz Days is more rewarding for you than finding M52.

Cool. :tu:

Just out of interest, what was the Generation source of your Electrical? I presume you are not doing self-solar nor wind. But... As a function of where I /believe/ you are you have a lot of hydro (read: gravity) opportunities for electron generation.

I find some amusement in this. Heating Human spaces using compute can actually be more carbon neutral than burning gas.

And, beyond the risk of electrocution, a bit safer from a CO perspective... 9^)

My apologies if the immediate above was a little over the top... The entire country of Barbados lost power yesterday.

Great fun...

I'm wired to the grid. In Oilberta it's mostly combined cycle natural gas at this point. They are building gigawatts more solar (soon to have more than any other province), but the available hydro is mostly tapped out.

It's shocking how bad the grid is there. I thought it was a wealthy country.

You just might be addicted to GIMPS if your trial factoring
is the reason for your wealthy country to lose power
.

You just might be addicted to GIMPS if your computer farm has interfered with a war effort:
One of Europe’s largest ammunition manufacturers has said efforts to meet surging demand from the war in Ukraine have been stymied by a GIMPS cruncher who is monopolising electricity in the region close to its biggest factory.

The chief executive of Nammo, which is co-owned by the Norwegian government, said a planned expansion of its largest factory in central Norway hit a roadblock due to a lack of surplus energy, with the construction of the cruncher's new data centre using up electricity in the local area.

“We are concerned because we see our future growth is challenged by the search of prime numbers,” Morten Brandtzæg told the Financial Times.

the italicized part has been changed, but it might not be too far off the truth...
Interesting to see another Albertan here, glad to see someone from my province is just as nerdy as I am!
